Shantanu Ghosh is an extremely talented and versatile playback singer from Kolkata, India. He has a number of prestigious music albums in India and Bangladesh covering multiple genres such as folk, modern, pop and semi-classical, owing to to his ability to modulate and emote as the genre required. He is also an acclaimed music teacher and very passionate to reach out to aspirants across the globe. In addition to his forte of folk songs of Bengal that he inherited from his musician parents in the lineage of the doyens of Bengal folk such as Amar Pal, he also plays a number of instruments that he picked up effortlessly since young age. From being Sa-Re-Ga-Ma champion of 2001 to sing for eminent music director Debojyoti Mishra on Star Jalsa and Zee Bangla, to sing playback as well as act in Aparna Sen movie, to sing playback in the movie “Mati” for internationally acclaimed renowned actor Adil Hussain’s song “Nisha Lagilo Re/ Banka Doi Nayne Nisha Lagilo Re” that created a stir in Bengali movie songs on YouTube has been quite a musical journey for Shantanu. Although very busy with his performances and creating music albums and play-back, he also shows up as a well-known actor in many Bengali TV serials and drama. Yet, he has agreed to be a faculty at Prana and offer his time to teach for international students of vocal music.
In the meantime, the learning that is going on and what I have learned so far, that is, throwing voyages from Bhatiali to the four walls of the studio – is an attempt to teach. After all, music and art are not acquired by giving and receiving knowledge or education – it can be transmitted through sense – the rest? Dependent on life and livelihood.
